Though I do prefer other movies like Revolver, Doomsday and Donnie Darko to it, with those I can always understand when people don't see in them what I do. They speak in a different language - are they a different species? Why are they dressed in normal working clothes? Where are they on the food chain? What where when why how?īut overall this is up there in the vampire movie canon.Ī new-age, brilliant vampire movie that never got the acclaim it rightfully deserved.ģ0 Days of Night is one of the few films I like that I can never understand why other people don't. I would've liked a lot more backstory and world-building on the vamps. And what was in the Aussie water in the 2000's that gifted us blond horror staple bad-asses like Melissa George and Radha Mitchell? What the hell happened to him? He was great in Penny Dreadful and played a decent C-level player in the recent Wrath of Man. This was queerly inspired by Carpenter's 80's and 90's work with a similar score and "tryin' to survive" in a claustrophobic location with an external threat. I think these type of movies turn that environment on its head, taking away those comforts and then having something terrifying outside to worry about.įrankly, this could've been a John Carpenter movie, but Carpenter lost his mojo somewhere in the 90's. I love the snow and skiing, bundling up for that sudden blast of cold as you leave your very comfortable and toasty "temporary" abode. My love for "trapped in the arctic" horror really started with John Carpenter's The Thing. And director David Slade is too blame as well - directed Twilight Eclipse. Then Twilight made them all glittery and horny in 2008, and CW's "Vampire Diaries" took all the models from "Teen/Seventeen Magazine" - and then threw in stupid love triangles for good measure. I think 30 Days of Night, released in 2007, was the last movie to serve up wickedly brutal vamps. I've pining for the days when vampires were vicious and menacing.
